Our Atholl Heritage

Royal Lodge No. 207 EC proudly carries the distinguished heritage of being an Atholl Lodge. The term refers to lodges chartered under the "Antient Grand Lodge of England," also known as the "Atholl Grand Lodge" due to the Third and Fourth Dukes of Atholl serving as Grand Masters for much of its existence. This Grand Lodge was formed in 1751 by Masons who believed in preserving the ancient traditions of the Craft, bringing a more democratic approach to Freemasonry and attracting artisans, tradesmen, and professionals who wanted both to participate in this venerable institution and have a voice in its governance.

The Antients were particularly successful in spreading Masonic light throughout the British Empire through their military lodges. In 1813, the Antients and the Premier Grand Lodge (the "Moderns") united to form the United Grand Lodge of England, but lodges like ours maintain deep pride in our Atholl origins. Today, Royal Lodge No. 207 EC stands as one of 122 Atholl lodges still operating worldwide—part of what has been described as "a necklace of sparkling diamonds stretching around the world."
